About Us / History
The Bridge Street Church of Christ dates its origin from
Jerusalem A.D. 30. In doctrine, in faith and in practice,
the purpose of the Bridge Street Church of Christ is to emulate
the church established by Christ (Matthew 16:18) and recorded
and revealed in the pages of the New Testament.
We are an instrumental, non-denominational congregation,
completely autonomous. Our hope is to unite all men under
the name Christian, recognizing the sacred Scripture as supreme
authority in governing the church today (2 Timothy 2:15).
We have as guidelines to our thinking, "Not the only Christians
- but Christians only." "Where the Bible Speaks - We Speak.
Where the Bible is Silent - we are Silent." "In express
Biblical commandments, rightly divided - uncompromising
obedience; In areas of opinion - liberty and charity to all
men."
We hold as essential to salvation such doctrines as: the
divinity of Christ; the blood atonement; the inspiration of the
Bible; Faith; Repentance; Confession; Immersion; and the living
of a godly, faithful life.
There are over one hundred and twenty-five thousand members of
this persuasion in Ohio alone. The Churches of Christ,
individually, support some forty Bible Colleges; over twenty Day
Schools; Hospitals; Children's Homes; Homes for the Aged - in a
world-wide ministry. We have in our ranks a thousand
missionaries serving at present in two hundred and forty fields
throughout the world.
The Church of Christ was established in this county in 1832, by
Barton W. Stone, an early leader in the Restoration Movement.
Early meeting places in Chillicothe were buildings at the corner
of Hickory and Main; Sugar and Water; and the Odd Fellows Hall.
In 1901 a lot was purchased on Bridge Street for $1,400.
On January 19, 1902, the first building was dedicated.
About 1930 all property was sold and what later became known as
First Christian Church was established. In 1933, former
members came back and re-purchased the property, and reorganized
the Bridge Street Church of Christ. In 1966 ground was
broken on recently purchased property adjacent to the old
building, and on October 30, 1966 the new church building of
Bridge Street Church of Christ was dedicated to the service of
God.
